Welcome to the Middle School at TIS!

Passing through middle school is such an important milestone in a child’s life, and at The Independent School, our teachers and staff welcome all students heartily. Middle school is a place and time where students begin to define the person who they want to become. Here, they develop their talents, create a sense of belonging, learn new skills, set goals, and solve problems -  all while preparing to make a difference in the world.

In addition to providing a challenging core curriculum of English, math, science, history, physical education, technology, and foreign language, we believe adolescence is a time to try new avenues such as instrumental music, drama, dance, vocal music, athletics, community service, problem-solving, and many other dynamic electives. Our school cultivates a student’s desire to explore in a risk-free environment. From the field to the gym floor, from Student Council to Scholars’ Bowl, from robotics to the stage, our students are offered numerous opportunities to get involved in the school community. If a student is interested in trying a new activity, then this middle school is the place to be!

We believe communication is a key element when working with middle school students, so many opportunities are provided for parents to know what is happening on campus. Links to teachers’ homework pages through The Independent School website allow access to daily assignments and snapshots of classroom topics. Also, each grade level communicates with families through weekly electronic newsletters, and teachers and parents communicate often through email, phone, and/or personal conferences. Can a parent or student check periodically on grades? Yes, through the My Backpack grading and reporting system. Can a parent be a vital part of the TIS community? Yes, through communication and the active parent group at the Middle School. You are invited to participate because we treasure involvement by all!
