Community Service

Community Service is integral to the spirit of The Independent School. Among many other activities, we “Stuff A Bus” every winter with new items for the Children’s Home. Admission to Middle School dances frequently consists of canned foods for the hungry. We “Walk for Diabetes” and we sing at retirement homes.

In Upper School, community service is a requirement for Graduation. The fifty hours of volunteer service may come through involvement in a church, a local hospital, Boy or Girl Scout troops, a national organization such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Red Cross or Habitat for Humanity, or something about which the student feels passionately. Students’ interests have included gathering new hats for children undergoing chemotherapy, holding a “White Socks” competition to provide clean footwear for low income diabetes patients, and introducing inner city children to the joys of horseback riding.

Community Service projects have been recognized with regional awards. In 2006, Southwestern College recognized a community service project, led by Independent’s National Honor Society, as the best in a five-state region.
