Mock Trial
Mock Trial is an extracurricular activity in the spring semester. The mock trial competition is run by the Kansas Bar Association in Kansas and nationally by the National High School Mock Trial Association. In Mock Trial, teams of six to eight students act as lawyers and witnesses to try a case based on witness statements provided prior to the competition. The students try the case against students from other schools in a real courtroom. They are judged in competition by real judges and practicing attorneys.
TIS has won the State Championship in Mock Trial five of the last six years competing against 5A and 6A teams and has gone on to represent the State at the National Mock Trial Championship. In 2008, the TIS team finished 14th out of 42 teams at the National Championship tournament.
Mock Trial is coached by John Steere, who also teaches social studies and coaches debate. Mr. Steere was a litigation attorney for eleven years at law firms in both Kansas City and Wichita and uses his legal training to help hone the analytical and courtroom skills of the mock trial participants.
