Tennis
Tennis is offered to students in the Middle School and the Upper School. The girls compete in the fall and the boys compete in the spring.
The Independent School is proud of the accomplishments of the boys' and girls' tennis teams and the tradition of success that they have established. The girls’ tennis team has attended the State Tournament consecutively since 2003 and won the State Championship team title in 2003, 2004, 2006-2008. In 2009, they landed the League and Regional Championship and placed 2nd at State. In 2010 their reputation continued with a League Championship, finishing in the runner-up position at Regionals, and losing by only one point at State. Since 2003, the girls have had five State Singles Champions (2003-2006, 2009) and three State Doubles Champions (2003, 2004, 2007).
The boys also have a strong history of State Champions. They won Regionals in 2007, have had 6 State Singles Champions since 2002, and won the Boys' Team State Championship in 2011.
The Independent School has a no-cut policy for Middle School and Upper School tennis. Sportsmanship and respect for fellow competitors are prominent in the coaches’ philosophy in teaching this “lifetime sport”. The Independent School offers a full schedule of varsity and junior varsity tennis matches.
Coaching Staff:
Simon Norman — Head Tennis Coach. Simon has been coaching the Upper School teams for 11 years. He has acquired 6 State Championships (Girls' Team State Championships: 2003, 2004, 2006-2008; Boys' Team State Championship 2011). He has also coached 11 singles State Champions (6 boys, 5 girls), and 4 doubles teams State Champions (3 girl teams, 1 boy team). Simon has been named High School Coach of the Year 4 times, is USPTA certified at the P1 level, and USPTA certified as a Specialist in Competitive Player Development.
Laura Norman — Middle School Tennis Coach, 6th Grade English Teacher. Laura is in her third year coaching the Middle School Tennis teams. She is a life-long fan and player of the sprot, competing in high school and on adult league teams.
