Students can choose to study instrumental music beginning in 5th grade at The Independent School. Students may choose to learn a variety of instruments from brass to woodwind to percussion. 5th Grade Beginning Band meets every day, and students learn the basics of playing their instruments, eventually dipping their toes into the waters of many different musical styles, including classical, jazz, and even rock & roll!
In the Middle School, a full composite Band class is offered as a daily elective option for beginners as well as more advanced players. Students in both 6th grade and 7/8 band will explore a wide range of musical styles while they continue to gain experience and facility on their instrument. This in turn opens up opportunities for participation in solos and small ensembles at the CPMSL Music Festival and the MS Jazz Band for 7th & 8th graders. Upper School Band is the showpiece of our instrumental music department, and the band plays at all home football and basketball games, as well as concerts and festivals throughout the year, putting TIS's best musical foot forward and being ambassadors for our school while at the same time working on engaging and exciting music in a variety of styles. At the US level, students also have the opportunity to audition for CPL, District, and State level honor groups as well as CPL, Regional, State solo and ensemble festivals. Our Instrumental Music Program is a dynamic, growing program, and all of our students have the opportunity to shine! All students in band are under the direction of Mr. Joe Clements |
