Mrs. Overstake's classes have been having lots of fun! Both 5th and 6th grade classes chose an "ecowarrior" to present to their classes. Each "ecowarrior" was a student who has been changing our world, even when it seems difficult. These helpers faced a problem, found an action or solution and have been leaving a lasting impact on our world. 

 

Next, Fifth grade students explored the conditions necessary for cloud formation by forming a cloud in a bottle and gently releasing it. After a discussion, students prepared their bottles with a little water, a few smoke particles and then applied and released pressure, learning that clouds are formed with a rapid drop in pressure, forcing the water vapor to condense on the smoke particles. 

 

And finally, 5th Grade finished the water cycle unit by making an edible aquifer. They learned about soil and rock layers and how pollution can percolate down through the soil and into our water supply. After layering rocks and making a confinement layer ( chocolate chips, cereal, mini marshmallows and sprinkles) with an aquifer of clear soda, they watched their clear water supply turn colors as they pulled the water up into their straw. Of course, after they were done learning, they had a sweet treat to enjoy!
