College Counseling

9th Grade

Students begin exploring their interests and connecting that self-discovery with their college goals.
Students are first introduced to The Independent School’s College Counseling Program in the spring of their 8th Grade year during Moving Up Day. In ninth grade, students are encouraged to look through a lens of exploration and self-discovery—both academically and otherwise—becoming active members of the community by participating in clubs and extracurricular/service activities. In September, parents of ninth-graders are introduced to College Counseling offerings during Meet the Teacher Night. The college counselor meets with students both individually and collectively, introducing them to college counseling software and presenting them with a broad overview of the admissions process. Students are also offered guidance in course selection for the upcoming year. 9th grade students take both the PreACT 8/9 and the PSAT 8/9 in October.
