    Open to the community, the Summer at Independent program offers students an opportunity to engage in learning and fun throughout the summer. We are thrilled to provide a wide variety of classes and camps for all ages. From drama and fine arts to academics, sports, and all-day camps, we provide options for all of your family’s summer needs.

  • WEEK 1: Mon. June 8 - Fri. June 12, 2020

    Panther Adventure Camp (9 week Camp)
    • Instructors: Mrs. Cathy Jensen, Mrs. Marti Dougherty, and Mr. Shane Walck
    • Weeks 2 - 9, June 8 - August 7: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Grades: K - 8th
    • Weekly Full Day: $222.50
    • Weekly Half Day AM or PM: $112.50
    • Single Day: $62.50 (Must register 24 hours in advance. Billed per day used at end of each week)
    • Supply fee: $27.50 (one time)

    Safe fun begins with Panther Adventures! This summer the Lower School gymnasium will be transformed into a summer oasis. Campers will be divided into groups of no more than 9 students with 1 adult staff member and rotate through various fun activities including art projects, science experiments, and much more! Please click the letter above for more information about how Panther Adventures will be safe and fun!

    Private Band Lessons (by appointment)
    • Instructor: Mr. Joe Clements
    • By appointment, Grade(s): Any TIS student enrolled in 2020-21 Band
    • Location: Determined when appointment is set to allow for distancing
    • Cost: $200 for 8 lessons

    Taking lessons over the summer is a great way to stay in shape on your instrument. Private music lessons offer a constructive, one-on-one approach to refining technique and tone for any player. Times arranged to fit the student's schedule. Requirements: band instrument in working order, music selected by the instructor.

    Independent Strength and Conditioning
    • Instructor: Led by Eric Swenson, staff includes Head and Assistance Coaches from all sports.
    • Week 2 - 9: June 1 - June 25 Open, July 6 - Aug 7 Open (No Fridays), 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
    • Location: Upper School Weight Room, Gymnasium, and Panther Field.
    • Cost: $150 (one time fee)

    We will be following ALL KSHAA and government distancing guidelines for this and all programs. Please check back as information may change.

    The TIS Summer Strength and Conditioning Program is an athletic performance based program, designed for middle and upper school students. The participants will train four days a week for a total of 8 weeks. Athletes will be broken into groups based upon their age, training experience and abilities. With a developmentally appropriate individualized program, athletes will utilize appropriate instruction, barbell lifts, Olympic lifts, bodyweight movements, and various functional strength and conditioning methods. Our goal is stronger, quicker, and faster athletes with greater work capacities. Our daily workouts will begin with complete group warm-up, followed by a rotation of weights , plyometric drill, and speed and conditioning drill work. Separate parent release required.

    Woodworking

    • Week 2: 06/8- 06/12, 9 am - 11:30 am, Grade(s): 1st - 5th

    If your child enjoys using tolls and working with their hands this is the camp for them! Students will be supervised closely while using a jigsaw, chop saw, hand drill, drill press and wood burning tools to make both art and functional items for the home.
    
    Potions and Pixie Dust (At The Enchanted Mermaid)

    Potions + Pixie Dust is a summer day camp for kids! Class includes hands-on learning about nature. Instruction is also given in singing, dancing, have fun dressing up with a pixie makeover. Build your own fairy home. Amazing arts and crafts will be completed each day. Lots of paint and glitter. You’ll even make sparkly potions and learn about the magic of pixie dust!

    Audition Techniques
    • Instructor: Mr. Josh Cain
    • Week 2: 06/8- 06/12, 2 - 3 pm, Grade(s): 6th - 12th

    Audition material and techniques are helpful whether you are sending in a video or auditioning live. This class will give you the confidence and the skills to go into any audition ready to stand out in a crowd.

    Coding for Littles

    Coding isn’t just for big kids! In this class, students will learn how to code using the "Code & Go Robot Mouse". Coding teaches problem solving, critical thinking, if-then logic, group collaboration, and communication skills! Students will program their mouse step-by-step through mazes, storyboards, and different challenges that reinforce their letters, shapes, numbers, and much more!

    Chemistry of Cooking

    Have you ever wanted to learn how to cook? In this class you will learn how to cook using a variety of ingredients and tools. You will learn skills for cooking as well as how to follow a recipe. Afterward, we will enjoy our meals together with a "pinch" of chemistry!

    Study Skills and Test Preparation

    Test taking can be hard, especially in upper school classes! This ten day course will help you gain testing skills you can use to pass exams in all your classes. The course will also include tips and tricks for doing well on the ACT and SAT exams.

    Coding and Creating Apps
    • Instructor: Mrs. Amanda Hadley

    No previous programming experience needed! Learn to program by creating fun apps that work on computers and gadgets like iPads and Android tablets. We will be using a special set of commands that are written in JavaScript, one of the most popular programming languages in the world. Create fun games to take home and play! (Note: If you’ve already taken this class before - there are plenty of new apps to code and play!)

    Robotics Camp

    Explore the worlds of engineering, robotics, and coding with the VEX Robotics Design System. Get hands-on experience building a frame and base for the robot and engineer its wiring. Build your own bot, learn to program and participate in an in class competition! This camp is open to rising 6th-12th grade boys and girls.

    Virtual Production

    This class would offer a look into how theatre is continuing with an online audience. With a script design to be performed online, students will learn acting techniques for the camera, how to create characters from household items. Using your imagination and what is on hand has never been more fun!

    Sing Together!

    While we can't get together in person to sing and play in large groups, we can absolutely do it virtually! Join us for a weekly Google Meet where we will sing and play, and bring your favorite children's songs and games to share. Let's stay connected through music!

    Chemistry of Baking

    Have you ever wanted to learn how to bake? In this course you will learn how to follow recipes, make modifications, and a variety of tips and tricks for baking in a conventional oven. If time allows, we may enjoy some of our baked treats with a "sprinkle" of chemistry!

    Draw your favorite characters, make fun snowflake crafts, use metallic and liquid watercolors with different resists to draw snowflakes, watercolor creams, paint on canvas and make homemade puffy paint.

    Adulting 101
    • Instructor: Ms. Danielle Wilson
    • Week 5, 7/6 - 7/10, 10 am - 12 pm, Grade(s): 9th - 12th

    Everything you need to know before you leave the house as an independent adult, this course will help prepare you for whatever lies ahead! Options for topics include: finances, caring for a home, vehicle care and maintenance, insurance, self care, etc. This course will be adjusted to the needs of the individuals taking the course.

    Beginning Guitar
    • Instructor: Mr. Drew Patton
    • Week 8, 7/6 - 7/10, 1 pm - 2 pm, Grade: 3rd - 5th

    This class aims to build on concepts and literature found in your child's music class in such a way that not only sets them on the path of classical musicianship, but also begins to lay foundational support for creativity on the instrument. Lessons are presented in fun and engaging ways that allow children a great deal of "hands on" time with musical & instrumental concepts. Students will need to bring an acoustic guitar, preferably with nylon strings.

    Garden to Table
    • Instructor: Mrs. Keely Patton

    Play in the garden with Mrs. Patton to see how food goes from a seed to food on your table. We will work in the community garden, harvest our crops, and learn how to make healthy foods from what we grow, including canning our own jam!

    Students will ride and learn about the health and caring of horses. Each day will include the opportunity to ride, plus learn how to care for the equine environment. Transportation to the WRA facility from Independent is currently paused due to Covid-19 precautions. Check back for updates.

    "The Fairy House Series," by Tracy Kane, will be our guide as we learn the difference of artificial and natural materials. The children will be encouraged to cherish and respect wildlife and their habitats and to create their own fairy houses...anywhere! A bag of natural materials (twigs, smooth rocks, pine cones, etc.) might be fun to collect and bring to class and add to our large building basket. We'll dress up each and every day from clothing in our fairy house room or the children may wear favorite items from home.

    Jump Start 6th Grade

    "For students who have completed Mr Clement's guitar class or have had lessons before. Lessons are presented in fun and engaging ways that allow children a great deal of "hands on" time with musical & instrumental concepts.     From math to reading we will prepare for the first day of class! Be ready for multiplication, novel studies, narrative writing, cursive writing and a whole bunch of fun!

    Calling on incoming 5th graders! We are ready to review with some of the most important skills you need to have mastered in order to be ready for 5th grade. There will be games, technology, and videos. Come review your skills and have fun!

    Fabulous Felines

    Have fun drawing Pushteen cartoons, Hello Kitty, sculpting a purrrfectly cute clay cat, making collage pieces and painting a Laurel Burch inspired shiny cat canvas. Bring a photo of your favorite cat to draw one on one with the instructor.

    Pantherettes Youth Cheer Camp

From the Director

We have missed you all so much. It is so evident how much we rely on our community in times like this and we cannot wait to have your children back under our roof again. Even though we are eager to get back to normal, we also must adjust to a “new normal” in an effort to minimize exposure to COVID-19 and prevent the spread of this virus. Here are our plans for our summer program to maximize safety, as well as provide a fun environment for our students.
